Writing is one of the four skills in English learning.Many scholars and teachers have done research on college students' English writing.However the results indicate that in English writing students pay more attention to grammar,vocabulary and often translate Chinese into English on the basis of Chinese manner which leads to nonnative-likeness and singleness in structures and expressions.In recent years,with the research of conceptual metaphor theory,both home and abroad scholars believe that conceptual metaphor theory provides a new method to the second language teaching.Based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson,this paper studies the following two questions:(1)What is the effect of the application of conceptual metaphor theory on students' metaphoric competence in English writing?(2)What is the effect of the application of conceptual metaphor theory on students' writing achievements in English writing?In order to verify whether the application of conceptual metaphor to English writing teaching in college can answer these two questions,the writer conducted a 15-week teaching experiment between two classes in one college.One is control class and the teacher takes traditional English writing teaching method.The other is experimental class and the teacher applies conceptual metaphor theory into English writing teaching.The research instruments include pre-test,post-test and interview.By collecting and analyzing the experimental data through SPSS 17.0 software and combining with the interview data,the writer draws the conclusion that the conceptual metaphor theory can improve the metaphoric competence and the writing achievements of college students.The application of conceptual metaphor theory to English writing teaching in college is feasible.Finally,the application of conceptual metaphor theory to college English writing teaching is still at the experimental stage,and there are still many shortcomings,so the writer puts forward some pedagogical implications and research limitations in order to provide suggestions for future research.
