The translator's subjectivity is an important part of translation studies.Since the “cultural turn” of translation studies,the translator has come to the stage from behind the scene and nowadays,the translator's subjectivity has become one of the hottest topics in the study of translation theories.However,in recent years,the study of the translator's subjectivity has been focused on other-translated works.As a special phenomenon in translation studies,self-translation has not been paid much attention to,and has been neglected on the verge of the translation theories.At present,only a few papers and journals have spoken of the exertion of the translator's subjectivity in self-translation phenomenon,but these researches are unsystematic and not through enough.In the history of Chinese literary translation,Eileen Chang's self-translation is the most typical.From1943 to 1971,Chang spent 28 years rewriting and self-translating her original novella.This phenomenon is rare whether in Chinese translation history or in Western translation history.The self-translated The Golden Cangue provides us with a brand-new research angle for the translator's subjectivity.The thesis has selected Eileen Chang's Chinese version and her self-translated version of The Golden Cangue as the research object,and used comparative analysis to explore the exertion of the translator's subjective initiative in Eileen Chang's self-translation process and its constraints.The author holds that compared with other-translators,whether in choice of the text or in self-translation of the cultural phenomena,Eileen Chang as both the author and the translator has had a greater freedom and dominance over the original text.Eileen Chang mainly adopts foreignization as her self-translation strategy.Literal translation,transliteration,literal translation and annotations are commonly used translation techniques for the purpose of preserving,developing and expanding Chinese traditional culture and literature.Eileen Chang's painstaking annotations of Chinese culture as well as her exquisite writing style as a female writer highlight the outstanding features of Eileen Chang's self-translation.On this basis,the author has also probed into the reasons why The Golden Cangue is not popular with American readers,drawing the conclusion that Eileen Chang's English version The Golden Cangue is really a fully self-translated text,not her casually rewriting but her creative self-translation.This thesis will provide some insights into further studies of self-translator's subjectivity,comparative studies of the self-translated text and other-translated text and studies of Eileen Chang's self-translation practice in the future.
