Colm Toibin's Novels In The Perspective Of Feminism

Colm Toibin(1955-),the contemporary Irish writer and scholar,is a world-class master in literature.He never denied he was a gay,and left his hometown wandering all around in his life.His novel is plain natural and touching delicate story.He is widely concerned.This article selects Colm Toibin's three novels shortlisted for The Man Booker Prize:Blackwater Lightship(1999),The Master(2004),Brooklyn(2009)as the main research object,using the feminism critical and the close reading of texts as the research method,analyzing The Colm Toibin's contents and causes of his views about women,his writings with the views of women,the female and male images in his novels,the "androgynism" in his novels and their characteristics,in order to reveal the feminist tendency of Toibin,and his tring to promote the development of The feminist efforts.This paper is divided into three chapters:The first chapter,glances Toibin's works and sums up Toibin's view about women:women have self-pursuit,self-growth awareness and ability,have the right to education,access to work,against the male rights.They are gentle,brave,rebellious,kind and so on."Maternal Instinct" is the innate nature of women,a good woman should deal with the relationship between family and work.Analysising the Toibin's view about women,there are three reasons:firstly,Toibin's father died at his childhood,and he was influenced more by his mother,and the urine subtle acceptance of the feminist ideological enlightenment;secondly,as a gay men that have the femininity of the party,Toibin's view about women will consciously move closer to feminism;third,as the women's status has become more and more important,Toibin's view about women naturally becomes more inclusive and self-corrective.The author believes that Toibin's writing has some disadvantages:the female living environment is narrow,the emotional of rebellion is ups and downs and other issues.The second chapter,with the creation time of Toibin's axis,analyzes the many female and male images of the three literary works Blackwater Lighthouse,Master and Brooklyn.There are Helen who pursuits the self-reliance,to achieve the value of self-life,Alice who grows in the wandering,and Alice,Minnie,Constance who against the old society:they have consciousness,knowledge and so on;the Russian princess has been imprisoned.Nancy and Rose was delineated in the town:as the young of the edge of the male power society,they was sacrificed.Of course,there are types of male images in Toibin's various:the old Henry crumbls the male authority,the Helen grandfather,father,husband and brother,have no sense of existence,and the youth Jim,Jack,Tony.Analysising the exist of women and men in the Toibin's view Which shows T6ibin's preference for women and women's consciousness,the correction and abandonment of male's consciousness.It is shown that,Toibin pursues the good wishes that the fusion of women and men,and pursues the good wishes of"androgynism".The third chapter,firstly,analyzes the different view of the concept of"androgynism" by different feminists.Secondly,analyzes the "androgynism"temperament of Toibin himself by close reading.Although he does not say that he is"bisexual" directly,he identifies the "androgynism" identity through many clues in his novel and his favorate to character with "androgynism" temperament.Thirdly,analyzes some characters with "androgynism" temperament,including masculine women,Lily,Catherine,Miss Kelly and Joanna.Their female consciousness has developed into a more stable stage.Feminine men,including Paul,Henry and the priest,have both masculine and feminine temperament.These men and women show a perfect personality,because of the "androgynism" temperament.
