Study On Death Narration In Colm Toibin's Novels

Enniscorthy is referred to over and over in Colm Toibin's novels.Owing to the common background,these novels are related with each other and make up “Enniscorthy Novels”.Enniscorthy Novels mainly describe family stories in the town,death is an essential clue in these novels.By text analysis to Enniscorthy Novels,this thesis aims at examining the types and methods of death narration and summarizing aesthetic significances.The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter divides death narration in Enniscorthy Novels into three types on the basis of text analysis,namely,death narration of background,of turning point and collective function.Death is applied respectively as the background,turning point and catalyst to move stories along in the three types of death narration.The second chapter analyzes the methods of death narration in Enniscorthy Novels.The first method is to regard death as a way of expression in daily life,including the absence of father,combination of sexual and death discussion.The second one is to apply fragmentation method to study revolutions of Ireland.On the basis of the last two chapters,the third chapter explores aesthetic significance of death narration in Enniscorthy Novels.Firstly,Violence of death in traditional Irelandliterature is exposed to the world by death narration.,thus death is routinized.Moreover,the application of death is used to help characters achieve self-realization and provide readers with positive life attitude and correct understanding to death.Additionally,for people's anxiety of identity,death narration shows that harmonious enables people to pursue the sense of belonging.In addition,Enniscorthy Novels provides a new presentation type for Ireland's modern regional novels,namely,applying death in daily life into narration.Local features and universal values are contained in this kind of narration.On the basis of Colm Toibin's death narration in novels,it is found that death is inevitable,so death should be regarded as one part of our life.It is practical to confront death bravely and remove fear and sense of alienation towards death with the help of warmth in family.
