What is still under a heated controversy is whether the author of the remaining handwritten copy of Xu Pipa collected in the National Library of China is Cao Yin or not.This master's thesis gives a review of the historical materials as well as senior scholars' arguments and queries,then researches this version in detail in the aspects of characteristics,purports,artistic standards and language,combining with the life story,thoughts,works of Cao Yin and the historical background,so that proving this version is which mentioned about by Grandmother Jia in the novel The Dream of Red Mansions and its author is Cao Yin.The part of Introduction introduces the finding of this handwritten copy and the relevant historical materials,reviews the arguments and queries in academia,expounds the significances and methods of this thesis.The importance and value of this issue concern literature,history and art.It is beneficial to all of the researches on The Dream of Red Mansions and its author,Cao Yin and his works,the politics and culture of Qing Dynasty,as well as the promoting of Kun Opera.This thesis bases on the text and searches the classics,uses several literature research and criticism methods appropriately to reveal the truth with a scientific and careful attitude as far as possible.Chapter one focuses on the essential characteristics of this handwritten copy.The spreading of this version is connected with Cao family's relatives and friends.It can be known that the especial naming taboo phenomenon are related to the habit and concept of taboo in Cao's mind prefer to his pomes,essays,handwriting works,memorials and The Dream of Red Mansions.Chapter two analyses the purports of this version.The plot,theme and makeup are all in accord with the recordation in Liu Tingji's Zaiyuan Zazhi,which is reliable according to the contact between Liu and Cao Yin.Telling the true meaning of the drama's title,excluding several suspected authors,refuting the misjudgment caused by the contradiction of text,and then analyzing the dialectical and impartial conception of history,comprehensive and persistent national spirit,confident and diverse cultural character,enlightened and positive female standpoint as well as the sobriety in the flourishing age,it is obviously that these factors are all connected to Cao Yin's experience,thoughts and works.Chapter three appreciates the artistic attainments of this version of Xu Pipa.Its structure and style meet Cao's pursue of innovation and grand aesthetic.It is performing in the aspects of the allocation of actors,writing skills,lyrics and lines,sing and dance.Cao Yin was talented and experienced at both drama composing and drama performance.Because of that,he did has abilities to create and preform this drama.However,the drama still failed to spread over the whole country due to some textual,performing and family reasons.Chapter four explores the linguistic code of the handwritten copy.Xu pipa,The Collected Poems of Lian Ting and The Dream of Red Mansions tied to each other in hidden and close ways such like words-building,allusion and rhyme.The last part of the thesis is a conclusion and expectation of the researches on Cao Yin and his works.The particularity of Cao Yin and his works is enough to support the independence of the study.It is necessary for researchers to pay more attention to the intertextuality interpretation and multicultural researches in literature,history and culture.
