This essay mainly focus on the study of Pipa in Song Dynasty and Liao Dynasty based on thedeveloping system of Pipa and its player etc. to track the development Pipa and its art status in SongDynasty and Liao Dynasty.This essay is divided into three parts:The first part is the brief introduction on the history background of Song and Liao period, andon the Pipa Art developing status by the Sui and Tang Dynasty, including the development of “QinHan Zi”, the four-string Qujing Pipa and five-string Pipa. This part aims at to make a backgroundintroduction of the Pipa Art in Song and Liao period in the following text.The second part focus on the demonstration based on the study of various documents, wallpicture and unearthed relics of the following aspects: the play occasion of Pipa in Song Dynasty; theshaping mechanism, play modes and methods; players and Pipa Songs. We will also pay attention tothe PiPa Art in Khitan (Liao) based on the Pipa developing condition of Song Dynasty from thethree points mentioned above. Meanwhile the second part will also briefly discuss the classic Pipasong “A Vulture Catching the Swan” in the Song Dynasty and Liao Dynasty.The third part of this essay introduces the influence of the Pipa Art in Song Dynasty andLiao Dynasty to the later dynasties. Through analyzing the Pipa developing mechanism since MingDynasty and Qing Dynasty and the comparison analysis of the classic Pipa song “A VultureCatching the Swan”, a deeply analysis of tracking the development of Pipa Art in Song Dynasty andLiao Dynasty will be presented in this essay.
