Memoir Translation Under The Guidance Of Principle Of Faithfulness

This report is based on the translation practice of Chapter One and Chapter Two of the book The Long Game written by the U.S. Republican senator Mitch McConnell. The Long Game is a memoir which belongs to documentary literature. The author describes how his different life period has influenced his later political life and what he went through and harvested during his political life. Finally, he made his dream come true after the long game. The language that the author uses is authentic and objective. The stories that the author selects is very typical. This book is a very successful memoir.A hundred years before now, YanFu proposed the translation standard "Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance" which represented in the Illustratory Noteson the book Evolution and Ethics.Mr. Yan put "Faithfulness" in the top priority and this represented his high praise of "faithfulness". Faithfulness is like a string that go through thousands of translation histories. Many arguments about translation originates from the principle of faithfulness. The principle of faithfulness includes two aspects, on the one hand, it refers to faithfulness in form; on the other hand, and it refers to faithfulness in meaning. The translator mainly discusses how to balance the two aspects and makes the translation faithful to the original text.This report consists of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. Its prime contents are as follows:The first part is the introduction. It includes the research status of the principle of faithfulness used in translation from home and abroad, problems that need the translator to solve and the practical significance in reality.The second part is the principal body, which consists of three chapters:Chapter One introduces the whole task. It firstly introduces the background information of the book, including the author and the content. Then it introduces the language features of memoir. Finally, it introduces the translation theory which will be used in this report-the principle of faithfulness.Chapter Two mainly discusses the translation process. It is divided into three parts,including preparation before the translation, preparation in the process of translation and checking and editing after the translation. At first, it demonstrates what preparation has been made before the translation. Then, preparations have been made according to the difficulties that may occur in the process of translation. Finally, in checking and editing part, it shows how the translator corrects the report.Chapter Three is case analysis. It is the key part of the report. The translator analyzed the problems that occurred in the process of memoir translation. Under the guidance of the principle of faithfulness, the translator puts forward the strategies at lexical, syntactic and discourse level. At lexical level, the translator uses conversion. At syntactic level, the translator uses literal translation and free translation to deal with the sentence translation. And other methods are also introduced. At discourse level, the translator focuses on the passage coherence and the tone accordance.The last part is the conclusion of the report. The translator makes a summary of the former statements. Based on the whole report,the translator draws a conclusion about how to balance two aspects of the principle of faithfulness. Then the translator summarizes the valuable experience, which could benefit the future memoir translators.
