From the late 1930 to the early 1940,it was the specialgolden time for the development of Chinese drama.During the period, drama director system also went fully mature. However,in the past academic research, the researchers mostly focused on dramas in the great rear area and ignored the research of Shanghai drama especially the directors. The article is in view of Shanghai drama directors in Shanghai during the Anti-Japanese War,selects the "four directors"HuangZuoLin,Fei Mu,Zhu Duanjun,Wu Renzhi and "four younger directors” Hu Dao,Hong Mo,Wu Tian and Wu Chen as the main research objects and analyzes the reasons and motivations of the establishment and maturity of the director system from such external factors as era environment and historical changes, etc.and such internal factors as changes in Shanghai drama circle and performance professionalism, etc.Due to various reasons, the Shanghai drama directors in this period had the same choice to develop multiple styles and schools and simultaneously play to the gallery;to seize on the audience as the key,so that they gained free space for growth in the seemingly extremely narrow social environment. At the same time, the Shanghai drama directors' exploration of theory and practice during the Anti-Japanese War also promoted the development of Chinese drama in the aesthetic and functional aspects.
