Abstract/Summary:
With the booming economic development, the communication between different cultures is becoming more and more important.Interpreter,as a bridge between China and the outside world, plays an increasingly significant role in cross-cultural communication. The identification of the interpreter’s role is a decisive factor for the interpreter to choose appropriate interpreting strategies, and thus influences the interpreting performance. However, the role of interpreters has been a controversial topic in the study of translation and interpretation.According to the traditional interpreting studies, interpreters should remain invisible and neutral throughout the whole process of interpreting.Their interpretation must keep accurate and faithful to the original words. No addition, omission or alteration is allowed.Based on this view, many international organizations of professional translators and interpreters successively formulated their own rules of professional conduct for their members. The professional conduct includes such rules as neutrality, invisibility, fidelity, and accuracy. But in interpreting practice, the author finds it is not feasible for an interpreter to keep absolutely neutral and completely invisible in some contexts.Sometimes,to exert the interpreter’s subjectivity is very helpful to the success of intercultural communication. This report is based on the author’s interpreting task for Shandong Langtech Food Technology Pty Ltd.According to the working settings in which the interpreter interpreted, the task can be mainly categorized into two types:the business negotiation interpreting and the liaison interpreting. Most of the time, the atmosphere of business negotiation interpreting is serious and solemn, while the liaison interpreting is relaxing and casual. After the interpreting task, the author finds that the existing professional conduct of interpreting and translating profession is not always applicable to the cases of interpreting practices.Interpreters should not unconditionally follow the professional conduct. In practice, the interpreter’s role is not fixed from the beginning to the end.In fact,it should be flexibly switched between "visibility" and "invisibility" according to the different interpreting contexts.Generally speaking, the seriousness of interpreting context has a direct bearing on the manifestation of interpreters’ subjectivity consciousness.Compared with the serious and solemn context, the casual and unofficial context of interpreting can provide more opportunities for interpreters to perform their subjectivity.Besides, the author realized that the listening materials that she used in daily practice are limited to such resources as BBC or VO A.In order to have a better performance in future,it is quite necessary for the interpreters to get accustomed to various English accents.
