Characters In "Intersecting Zone":Analysis Of The Characters Of World Of Plainess

By describing the impact of reform on the fate of different characters," World of Plainness" tries to write "the secret history of nation ".This paper uses Raymond Williams' theory of residual and emergent to explain cultural traits of characters,dividing Tian Futang,Sun Yuting,Sun Shaoping and Sun Shaoan into residual characters and emergent characters,to study "intersecting zone" as "Structures of Feeling" through analyzing changes in time reflecting by the fates of these four characters.First of all,analyzing Tian Futang and Sun Yuting as residual characters.Starting from identity and logic of them into political movements,by comparing the ways and results of these two characters,study complicated contradictions they faced in period of social transition.Lu Yao shows motility of residual with Tian Futang and passivity of residual with Sun Yuting.Secondly,analyzing Sun Shaoping as a romantic,irrational emergent character.From the similarities and differences of Gai Xia,Gao Jia Lin and Sun Shaoping on the issue of leaving for city,analyzing Sun Shaoping's romantic imagination of city life.By combing Sun Shaoping's identity that changes from rural teachers to coolie then to coal workers to show the difficulty of being a part of city at that time,and the difficulty shows non-rationality of Sun Shaoping.Thirdly,analyzing Sun Shaoan as another realistic and rational emergent character.Taking different attitudes of Liang Shengbao,Gao Sanxing and Sun Shaoan to the collective as entry point,analyze Sun's realistic side by combing Sun's confrontations with Tian Futang.Then analyze Sun Shaoan's rational side by combing episodes including the marriage choice,the opening of brick factory,division of Sun's family and the construction of school.Finally,this paper draws a conclusion that "intersecting zone" is a zone with complicated contradictions,where residual and emergent,romantic and realistic,non-rationality and rationality,fractre and continuity mix.The brew of contradictions is the structures of feeling of our society in transition period.And this is Lu Yao's present significance,by showing complicated contradictions in "intersecting zone",Lu Yao provides resources for us to solve reform crises in our time.
