A Report On The Translation Of Human Characters In Novels

The character,as one of the three factors(character,plot and environment)of novel,is an important and essential part.The effects of lively description to characters are promoting the development of plot,reflecting the style of whole work and expressing author's thoughts and emotion.From the view translation,rather than a simple transform of words,the work of translation is a second creation proceeded by translator.It is not a freewheeling performance but a creation whose style,expression and purport are accordant with original.Thus,in the progress of translating,translator should consider the point of character on the premise of overall style to get pith of story and make an excellent work.Based on the English-Chinese translation of the novel,The Narrow Road to the Deep North,written by the Australian author Richard Flanagan,this thesis explores the approaches to character translation and especially chooses four points that are portrait,movement,discourse and psychology to analyze.The first chapter is the background of this translation.It is task description including introduction of the text and significance of the subject.The second chapter is process of the task,which are pre-translation preparation,problems and solutions in process and post-translation proofread.The third chapter is the case study.In the part,firstly,parts of character description are picked up,and then are classified,summarized and illustrated in four points of view.And then,suitable strategies are applied according to the different word or sentence.For instance,I flexibly use vocabulary facing diverse object,combine or cut sentences to make they conform to Chinese logic.At last,the part is summarized what I have though and done.In the fourth chapter,conclusion is written through two parts that are conclusion of the case and post-translation introspection.After translated the parts of novel and chose the typical character description as cases,I analyzed the method of translation to character description combining with related translation strategy and put forward my own ideas.
