Study On Costume In Opera Turandot

Opera costume design is the production of opera and costume design, whose design and development focus on plot and characters, constituting opera system together with music, motion, lighting and stage design. It also plays a significant role in inspiring opera’s own creation and enhancing opera’s expressive force. Along with the perfection and improvement of opera since its entry to China, the significance of opera costume is also becoming more prominent. In such condition, opera costume designers are required to be equipped with profound cultural and costume design expertise as well as mature capabilities so as to develop and promote the Chinese opera industry.In this paper, costumes in Turandot of Germany, The Metropolitan Opera and Forbidden City versions are compared and analyzed from practical function, reproduction function, organizing function and symbolic function, based on this, the importance and influence of costume on opera is summarized and concluded. And some characters in these three versions are selected to investigate the individual factor and spatial factor in opera costume design. Based on study on characters in opera Turandot, this paper aims to find out the basic characteristics and rule of opera costume design, offering some inspiration for opera costume designers so as to perfect and promote the opera costume design.
