This translation practice chapters 1-3 is excerpted from Paul Levine's work E. L. Doctorow. It introduces how Doctorow uses new artistic forms to construct history, rebuild historical consciousness and emphasize the relation between texts and history, revealing the truth of fiction and history with a unique perspective. It is an academic and professional book with clear logic and abstract expressions. According to the translation theory of Peter Newmark, the translator uses the semantic translation as the main translation strategy and communicative translation as a subsidiary strategy to accurately express the author's ideas and tries to be faithful to the style and content of the original text. This report gives an introduction of the English-Chinese translation practice. It mainly talks about the translation process, translation theory used in the process, and difficulties the translator encounters. It also tells how to solve the difficulties with the help of translation theory. The report is divided into five chapters. Chapter one describes the background and introduction of the translation project. Chapter two talks about the translation process, including preparation before translation, translation process and summary and retrospection after translation. Chapter three introduces the Peter Newmark's translation theory. Chapter four gives specific analyses of translating cases including:the translation of cultural and abstract words, translation of chapter headings and books' titles, long and complex sentences translation, and discourse translation. The last chapter is a summary of the translation practice. The introduction of the project and the translation of the book facilitate the transmission of Doctorow's thoughts and unique writing style in China.
