The Tiewengcheng(means iron jar-like city in Chinese)in Zhenjiang was built by Sun Quan(182A.D-252 A.D),the monarch of Kingdom of Wu during the Three Kingdoms Period.It is the oldest relic among all Sun Wu capitals as well as the best preserved one.With a unique architectural style,it is a precious historical material to study the history,military and culture of Kingdom of Wu.In 2013,the Tiewengcheng Ruins was listed into the 7th batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level by the State Council.Build around 200 A.D,the Tiewengcheng has a history of more than 1,800 years.Located at the pre peak of the Beigu Mountain,the Tiewengcheng Ruins forms an important historical relic of Kingdom of Wu together with multiple cultural relics of the Three Kingdoms located at the middle peak and post peak of the Beigu Mountain.During the Three Kingdoms Period,since the construction of the Tiewengcheng turned it into an important military district,it became the start of the construction of Zhenjiang.From the Western Jin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty,the Tiewengcheng had been the local government or state office of Dantu County,Jingkou City and Runzhou Province(all of the three places are now under the jurisdiction of Zhenjiang).Thus,it is an important node to clarify historical development of the ancient Zhenjiang City.Nowadays,due to the rapid development and expansion of Zhenjiang,the Tiewengcheng Ruins is enveloped by urban construction.Because of the urban construction activities,the protection of the ruins faces a series of severe challenges.For example,urban construction changes the terrain,the layout of the historical streets and lanes,and occupies buildings and roads above the ruins.All this threatens the authentic and complete protection of the ruins.The study aims to makes an in-depth study of the Tiewengcheng Ruins,explore the values of the ruins and problems faced by its protection,come up with specific and effective measures to protect and utilize the ruins,and probe into approaches to protect and utilize city relics.The research contents are mainly divided into the following four parts.First of all,by referring to historical documents and studying archaeological achievements,the paper probes into the historical development,ups and downs of the Tiewengcheng.By comparing archaeological achievements with the current land form of the ruins,the paper explores the scale,structure and layout of the Tiewengcheng Ruins in history,confirms the constituent elements and evaluates the value of the ruins on this basis.Secondly,through a field investigation and research on the protection status of the Tiewengcheng Ruins,the paper points out problems mainly faced by the protection and utilization of historical ruins and probes into causes and effects of those problems.Thirdly,on the basis of analyzing and learning from the protection theories and practical methods of similar ruins,the paper,guided by currently existing problems,combines the characteristics of the ruins and environment to put forward the principles,levels,strategies and concrete measures to protect the ruins and environment.Fourthly,by studying and analyzing the ruins' current exhibition and utilization mode,the paper combines the characteristics of the ruins and environment to come up with the principles and methods to display and utilize the Tiewengcheng Ruins,and put forward ideas and expectation about the ruins' sustainable development in the future.
