To investigate the contribution of recollection and familiarity in association recognition and item recognition, many researchers recently conducted extensive studies and found that familiarity could support item recognition and association recognition from unitization encoding and the domain dichotomy theory(DD). However, the item pairs used in researches of DD were mostly irrelevant, while those used in unitization encoding should be relevant. Thus it suggested that familiarity could contribute to between-domain inter-item association recognition. If the used materials were associated, familiarity would contribute to between-domain inter-item association recognition. Besides, researches on unitization also found the unitization of association information decreased the contribution of familiarity in its item recognition. Based on this, it could be proposed that familiarity in the item recognition of within-domain inter-item associations would be lower than between-domain inter-item associations. Excluding unitization, this study examined the effect of the related degree of stimulus on the contribution of recollection and familiarity in within-domain inter-item association recognition and between-domain inter-item association recognition. The results are as follows:(1) In association recognition, whether item pairs were relevant or irrelevant, the contribution of recollection in association recognition of word-picture pairs was greater than association recognition of word pairs. But when item pairs were irrelevant, the discrepancy of recollection in association recognition between word-picture pairs and picture pairs wasn't significant, while it showed significantly difference on the condition of relevant item pairs. It indicated that the contribution of recollection to association recognition between within-domain inter-item associations and between-domain inter-item associations affected by the type and the related degree of stimulus. Besides, the contribution of familiarity in association recognition between within-domain inter-item associations and between-domain inter-item associations had no significant difference.(2) In item recognition, whether item pairs was within-domain inter-item associations or between-domain inter-item associations, the familiarity in the item recognition of the relevant stimulus was lower than the irrelevant stimulus. It indicated that the related degree of stimulus led familiarity in item recognition to a cost phenomenon. In addition, whether item pairs was relevant or irrelevant, the contribution of recollection in item recognition of word-picture pairs was greater than item recognition of word pairs, while the discrepancy of recollection in item recognition between word-picture pairs and picture pairs was affected by the related degree of stimulus. And the contribution of familiarity in item recognition between within-domain inter-item associations and between-domain inter-item associations was no significantly different.
