The development of shipping industry internationalization presents a higher demand for the seafarer's English competence and seafarers' Nautical English education and training draws more attention.This research focused on nautical English and a New Nautical English Corpus(NNEC)was built up,consisting of Guide to Port Entry,Admiralty Sailing Directions Volume,Mariner s Handbook and textbooks of navigation major.With the BROWN and LOB as the reference corpora and the corpus software AntConc 3.2.1 and WordSmith as study tools,by comparison between NNEC and the reference corpus,the key word list of NNEC was extracted.This study was intended to examine the following issues:firstly,what are the key words in the New Nautical English Corpus(NNEC)?What are the features of these key words?Secondly,what are the features of collocations of these key words in NNEC?Thirdly,by comparison between NNEC and the reference corpus(BROWN and LOB),what are the differences and similarities between the key words collocations?What are the unique characteristics of NNEC?This study analyzed the key words in nautical English in both qualitative and quantitative approaches.The findings of this study are as follows:firstly,compared with general English,key words in nautical English are more navigation-related or ship-related,a large proportion of which are nouns;secondly,by the comparison between the self-built corpus and the reference corpus,it is found out that most shared key words are function words and most of peculiar key words in nautical English are nouns and verbs,which also belong to nautical terminologies;thirdly,by studying the collocations of selected key words,it is found out that the key word collocations are different between nautical English corpus and the reference corpus.What is more,in the nautical English corpus,collocations of lexical words are more fixed and they often collocate with function words.This study might assist nautical English learners and users regarding the use of nautical vocabulary.
