Information Processing Of Visual Nonverbal Symbols In Translation From The Perspective Of Semiotics

Translation is the process of transforming the information in one symbol system into the corresponding forms in another symbol system,reproducing the information,in order to eliminate barriers of communications among different symbol systems.This symbol system includes not only the linguistic symbols but the non-verbal ones.From the perspectives of cognitive science and semiotics,text is the carrier of symbols and the communication unit including both the linguistic symbols and visual non-verbal symbols.During the process of text translation,the language and visual non-verbal symbol elements play a role of conveying information.Therefore,our understandings of the meanings and functions of text cannot only stay at the level of linguistic symbols,and various meanings and functions carried by visual non-verbal symbols should also be considered.In this paper,the information processing of visual non-verbal symbols during the process of EST Translation(English for Science and Technology Translation)is studied from the perspectives of cognitive science and semiotics.With the coming of global informatization,the international exchange of science and technology is becoming increasingly frequent,and the demand for the translation of scientific text grows significantly.Users have higher requirements on the quality and quantity of the translation of scientific text.It becomes a challenging task for translators on science and technology about how to accurately translate both the meanings carried by linguistic symbols and the information and functions conveyed by visual non-verbal symbols in the scientific text during the information processing of scientific text.This paper mainly aims to research the barriers and problems in the information processing of visually non-verbal symbols in the scientific translation from theperspectives of cognitive science and semiotics,and then to reduce the pretermission and errors of translation,and to remove the communication obstacles among different symbols in translation practice of non-verbal symbols to increase the quality of scientific translation.Another aim of this paper is to discuss the influence of visual non-verbal symbols in the cross-cultural exchange of science and technology,and to find out the Chinese-English translation strategy of visual non-verbal symbols in the spread of scientific and technological culture.This paper takes qualitative study as its primary research method while quantitative study as secondary one,connecting with the introspective analysis.Through the information processing in English for science and technology text such as translation for computer text,the study and qualitative analysis on non-verbal symbols are taken.And this dissertation attempts to explore and analyze the characteristics of non-verbal symbols by natural observation with linguistics.Cognitive intention theory of Grice and Searle is the main theory to analyze data and non-verbal symbols translation.This study shows the characteristics of nonverbal symbol translation and the process of meaning construction vividly.It enables people to understand the process of translation through the comparison of arbitrariness and differences of semiotics,this paper commend the semiotics influence for nonverbal symbol.Seldom are there research about the translation of visual nonverbal symbols in technical translation from the perspective of cognitive science and semiotics.The author of this dissertation first mention that transcreation is applied in nonverbal symbol translation.This research try to get the method and strategies of translation from cognitive and semiotics research.The results of this study reveal the importance of the following three non-verbal symbols: translator's cognitive ability;pragmatic translation and receptor cognition convention.In this paper,the principles and strategies of information process of visual non-verbal are proposed in technical translation.At the same time,the paper suggests that the original meaning transfer is the basis of the translation communication signal,and ultimately the use of cognitive self-instruction to understand these signals,which is translated results at a given moment.In interpreting phenomena such as metaphors,icons and symbols,context is taken intoaccount through the construction of the necessary original meaning and understanding in the process of translation.The research process of nonverbal symbol translation is exactly a process that translator return between author and reader.Only translator can understand the whole symbols of source text,then,provide best translation text and the real meaning of symbols.The meaning and function of text is object of symbol signified.Both of them benefit readers understand the symbol carriers and symbol signified object according to translation culture and social conventions.The research of this paper conclude the importance and necessity of the information process of visual nonverbal symbols in technical translation from the perspective of cognitive science and semiotics for translator.Also,due to the differences in language,cultural background,natural environment,mindset,religion and values and other aspects,the translation of visual non-verbal symbols should take different translation methods and strategies.
