| Bilingual dictionary plays an important role in the process of learning a foreign language. In recent years, studies on bilingual dictionaries, both unidirectional (foreign-oriented or domestic-oriented) type and bidirectional type have been increasingly improved. With the improvement and progress of the compiling theory and practice of bilingual dictionaries, a new type of bilingual dictionary, i.e. one-volume foreign-native and native-foreign dictionary has come into being. Take English and French as examples, there is a large number of one-volume bilingualized bidirectional dictionaries (OBBDs) for users to choose, such as Robert & Collins French-English, English-French Dictionary series, co-published by the Robert Press and Collins Press and Harpers'Students English-French, French-English Dictionary series, published by Larousse Pres. In contrast, in China's dictionary market, a great variety of OBBDs are sold but many of them are pocket version and few have been updated to the third edition. Not until 2010 has the first large-size Oxford-FLTRP English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary been co-published by Oxford University Press and FLTRP.Does OBBD have the specialty and necessity of its existence? Who are the target users of the OBBD, native language users or foreign language users? What are the design features of OBBD? What are its practicalities from the user's perspective? Although OBBD is practical during the process of learning a foreign language, there are few related studies about it in China's lexicographical circle. This thesis takes R&C as the research object, as it has just been updated to the 10th edition in 2014 and stands for the highest achievement of OBBDs. The thesis aims to help people gain a better understanding of OBBD and give a more complete, accurate and comprehensive knowledge of OBBD by studying its typology, analyzing its design features on both the macro-and micro-structure levels, and discussing its user friendly practicalities from user's perspective. Moreover, the thesis also hopes to offer some valuable suggestions to users to assess more objectively and make choice more sensibly in finding a suitable dictionary.In the study, the paper draws on bilingual lexicographical theories both at home and abroad, such as Huang Jianhua's classification principles of bilingual dictionaries, Huang Jianhua and Chen Chuxiang's theoretical analysis on macroscopic and microscopic structure of bilingual dictionary, A.P. Cowie's dictionary studying theory from user's perspective, and user-friendliness from both communication theory and acceptance theory.Meanwhile, in order to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of this research, the study also carries out some experiments and data analysis. Firstly, questionnaire is used to investigate dictionary users, to analyze their preferred dictionary type and to study their purposes of using a dictionary. And Emphasis was given on analyzing the demand and the need of second consultancy. Secondly, sampling survey is taken in the French-English entries'part to analyze the entry structure of the R&C as well as the correspondence of the French headwords and English headwords. Finally, horizontal comparison is also used among R&C and other two one-volume dictionaries, O&F and C&F on both macrostructural and microstructural features. Through analyzing their strengths and weaknesses respectively, the writer hopes to enlighten OBBD in both lexicographical theory and compilation practice.After the research, it is found that R&C belongs to OBBD, and its target users are English and French native speakers, English and French learners and other language speakers who have basic French and English knowledge. As an OBBD, R&C has its special designing features, such as findability, readability and usability from microstructure. Meanwhile, compared with other OBBDs from the perspective of user friendliness, R&C is superior in providing phrasal examples, cultural information and its megastructural design. |
