China's anti-corruption campaign, under the leadership of the Party and state leaders, going on in order, has achieved remarkable results and has been attracting increasing attention from foreign media.Based on a proposed new model integrating the four-step framework of rhetorical criticism from Foss and Craig, and combining quantitative and qualitative methods, the present study analyzes 50 reports related to Chinese government's anti-corruption from two major US media——the Washington Post and New York Times,by studying ideographs and figures of speech utilized in these reports, and attempts to find their inherent ideology and rhetoric motivation,so as to give certain inspiration on China's external publicity and to reshape the international image of China. The research questions are:(1)what rhetorical devices are used in the reports on Chinese anti-corruption campaign;(2)what kind of ideology is embeded in these reports;and(3)what is the impact on China's national image.Ultimately, the findings reveal the ideology of disidentification in these reports, which spoil the image of China in the United States by shaping the undemocratic and autocratic image of Chinese government.
