Since the reform and opening-up,China has already integrated into the Globalization which accelerates the cultural fusion of different countries. With the development of cultural integration, more and more films and television programs present on the screen.Among these, documentary which describes and presents truth has gradually been concerned by audience and has gained popularity in recent years with the broadcast of Wild China-an epic six part natural history documentary series about China made as a partnership between the China Television(CTV,a subsidiary of CCTV)and the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC).Thus,it has aroused much attention in all circles. At the same time, subtitle translation of documentaries has also attracted attention in academic circles. However, researches of subtitle translation are apparently deficient in that many studies focusing on translation strategies. There is no systematic theory as the principle of subtitle translation, especially the subtitle translation of documentaries. Therefore,it is strongly needed to conduct theoretical researches on documentary subtitle translation. This thesis is conducted from the perspective of Eco-translatology,which is a newly developed theory on the basis of Darwin's theory of evolution.Eco-translatology makes a new explanation to the nature, process, standards and methods of translation in the light of selection and adaptation of translators whose influence has not been investigated deeply for a long time. The theory puts forward"translator centeredness" which focuses on translators' subjectivity and responsibility in translation process.Although the theory is new,it possesses a certain explanatory power for the translator's efforts.Under the guidance of "adaptation and selection",this thesis has a study on Chinese subtitle versions of Wild China. The thesis mainly studies"translator centeredness" and how translators optimize choices of eco-translation strategies and methods in documentary subtitle translation.Taking the CCTV subtitle version and online type of Wild China for example, the thesis gives an account of the macro-and micro-environment of the translation of the documentary. Then by a comparative analysis of certain chapters taken from the two versions,it evaluates the two versions of the documentary from the perspective of multi-dimensional integration to explore translators' adaptation and selection, and proposes translation strategies of documentaries. It can be found that translators make efforts to integrate the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions and mainly adopts making up and leaning on strategies to adapt to the target eco-environment.At last, with the standard of degree of holistic adaptation and selection, the CCTV version can be verified to achieve a higher degree and it gives a true presentation of China's natural landscapes and folk customs. Thus,Chinese audience can better understand the documentary.Through the comparative analysis of two target texts, the thesis aims to explore the influence of translators on translation activities and test the applicability of Eco-translatology in translation practice.
