Relegation,a distinctive political and cultural phenomenon in ancient China, has a long history and can date back to the Pre Qin Dynasty.Especially after Qin and Han Dynasties, this phenomenon become more and more obvious and outstanding. And a large number of relegated officials were kept in historical records,of them literary scholars took up a major position. So it has a great influence on the ancient literature. The relegated literary scholars, humiliated and exiled, but patriotic,humane,strong-minded,have created abundant relegation literature, with rich suject matter and excellent skills. The mix of relegation and literature contributes to a completely new literature genre, relegation literature. My thesis does research about the relegation poetry and articles of Han Yu,and can be divided into four chapters. The first chapter will introduce the relegation experience and relegation poetry and articles of Han Yu,written during his relegation time.In this part,my work, firstly, will clear the reason, the process and the result of Han Yu's being relegated twice, according to The Old Book of Tang History by Liu Xu,The New Book of Tang History by Ouyang Xiu,Han Yu chronicle by Lv Dafang and Han Yu critical biography by Bian Xiaoxuan and others. Then,it makes a complete record for the quantity of Han Yu's demotion articles, which provides what my research will deals with exactly, with the support of The Chronicle Variorum of Han Changli Corpus revised by Qian Zhonglian and The Collated Corpus of Han Changli emended by Ma Qichang. The second chapter does research about the flow of Han Yu's thinking and emotion. His whole psychological course can be depicted as three dominant stages : first feeling resentful and bitter, then scared and sad,and last meditating, reflecting on himself and being tranquil.Han Yu was influenced by the Confucianism " the mean and the discretion" in his whole life, therefore he minded the people and was loyal to country all along. The third chapter is about the theme of Han Yu's relegation poetry and articles.By the contrast of content, emotion and style in relegated and unrelegated time of Han Yu,my paper concludes that the theme of Han Yu's poetry and articles can fall into four branches : longing for homeland, awe of death and hardship, concerning for country and people and wishing for seclusion in countryside.Influenced deeply by the Confucianism throughout his life,Han Yu can't give up his sincere patriotic feeling, which can be indicated almost in his all relegated poetry and articles, conveying a feeling of nostalgia, even though he was relegated twice and his aspiration was beyond his reality.Experiencing clearly the life of the relegated region with the extremely uncivilized nature condition such as arduous mountain and deluge, the harmful air,the unpredictable weather and the dangerous wild animals,Han Yu often felt the falling of the death. However, when he got calm gradually,he began to thing about seriously what he had achieved during half a lifetime. He bestirred himself and turned the frustration into the motivation, and tried to achieve the value of his life through dealing with the affairs diligently and caring for the people rather than complain about what he had suffered.A long relegated life made Han Yu learn the truth of peacefulness and pureness and the vanity of wealth and glory,so a part of his poetry and articles show that he wished to resign and to be a hermit. The last chapter discusses the aesthetic and art features of Han Yu's poetry and articles.Han Yu is inclined to focus on the reality, steps on some exact environment and favors the odd and dangerous objects, for which can vividly reflect the rugged living environment and the dismal state of mind easily.
