English reading is of great importance in the process of learning English.The cultivation of reading ability has always been the focus in English teaching research in China.With the entrance of information and technology age,the access to information and knowledge has been totally changed with multimodal media.Traditional literacy faces great challenges of multiliteracies,so does the traditional reading teaching.This thesis is the application of the pedagogy of multiliteracies on college English reading instruction.The pedagogy of multiliteracies means teaching by means of multiple symbol system,such as language,image,sound,or painting and so on,which pedagogy regardes students as the main body in the class and provides more opportunities for students to be designers by themselves using various meaning making modes in the information age.The purpose of the thesis is to testify the effectiveness of the application of the pedagogy of multiliteracies in English reading class with two research questions:(1)What are the effects of the pedagogy of multiliteracies on college English reading achievements?(2)What are the effects of the pedagogy of multiliteracies on students' reading motivation and interest? The researcher answers the two research questions by a four-month experimental study,which involves 60 sophomores from two classes of non-English majors.Tests,questionnaires,and interview are the instruments of data collection,which results were analyzed with the help of SPSS 17.0 to answer two research questions.The results show that though there is no such obvious difference,English reading instruction based on the pedagogy of multiliteracies has improved students' reading proficiency.And students' motivation and interest in English reading have been improved with significant difference after the teaching intervention of the pedagogy of multiliteracies in experimental class(EC).Some limitations of the research and the pedagogical implications are presented at the end of this thesis.
