This thesis attempts to study the ecstatic emotion in Dionysos Mysteries, based on relational theory of emotional history, psychology, neuroscience and sociology. With the emphasis on the individual spirit and the afterlife in the Archaic and classical periods,Dionysos,by virtue of "birth-death-rebirth" myth, became the outlet of the inward world of common people. At the same time,Dionysos meet the needs of the people on the primitive instincts with various images. The entourage of Dionysos not only made him easier to distinguish with other gods, but enhanced the affinity of Dionysos because of their contact with humans. In addition, with its"birth-death-rebirth" fate and vitality,Dionysos has also became an essential deity of Eleusinian mysteries and Orphism.Based on the analysis of the theories of neurology, psychology and sociology, the thesis holds that music, dance, and collective activities play an tremendous role on awakening and strengthening people's emotions. In addition to the ritual elements, polis and women in the Archaic and Classical periods become the underlying causes of the emotions.Using Barbara's Theory of Emotional Community, the Greek city-state of this period was an emotional community with emotional norms and value system.Women lived in the community in accordance with the common emotional norms and habits of life.At the same time, with William's theory of emotion,it makes women awaken and strengthen the painful emotional experience in the emotional expression(emotive)by the lack of emotional communication and restrictions on the freedom of human nature. They were immersed in emotional suffering. Some people,in order to get rid of the current emotional norms, chose the Dionysos.Dionysos also became a destination for people's emotion by virtue of its promise to the people's happiness and powerful vitality. The emotion has an essential influence on religion,individual,city-state and people's creativity.Firstly, emotion become the basis of religion to maintain its existence and function.Secondly, the ecstatic experience meets the needs of the people, and the city-state uses the emotion to achieve the goal of strengthening the community and maintaining the rule of the city-state.Finally,emotion has an important impact on creative thinking, which boost development of Greek philosophy, religion, art and so on.As a specific emotion, emotions in the Dionysos mysteries are not only inextricably linked with the ritual elements and polis, while they have an indelible impact on religion and Greek society. The study of emotions in the Dionysos provides us with a useful reference and inspiration of the Greek city-state and its whole civilization.
