Stray Birds,one of the masterpieces of the world-famous Indian poet Tagore,is considered as one of the most popular English collections of poems in the world.Once appeared,it has been translated into many languages and has been spread all over the world.In the May 4th New Cultural Movement,Stray Birds was introduced to China.During the next 95 years,it has been translated many times by different Chinese translators.In these Chinese versions,Zheng Zhenduo's version is always regarded as the most classical one and still enjoys high popularity in China;Wu Yan's version receives many acclaims but is just popular for a short time;as for the latest Feng Tang's version,it is so controversial and is forced to be pulled off the shelves soon after its publication.The different receiving situations of the several Chinese versions provide the space of discussing the relations between the translations and their receptions in different historical and cultural background in China.The paper tries to make a research on the receptions of the three Chinese versions of Stray Birds in China,and then analyzes the major factors influencing their receptions from the perspective of translated literature of Medio-translatology.According to Medio-translatology,translation always happens under the specific historical and cultural context,and the receptions of translated literature – the product of literary translation,share a close relationship with various factors of the culture of target language in certain historical time.The perspective of Medio-translatology is not confined to the simple linguistic level but enters into the wider cultural level.It explores translation under the macroscopic context of society,history and culture and tries to find out the cultural reasons behind these phenomena.The thesis gives a brief introduction to Tagore and his Stray Birds first,and then makes a survey on the Chinese versions of Stray Birds and summarizes the previous studies on it.Later on,the related theories of Medio-translatology and translated literature are elaborated in the thesis,especially the relationship between translated literature and reception environments,as well as its translators.After that,the thesisdiscusses the reception status of the three influential Chinese versions of Stray Birds in China,and explores the major factors influencing their receptions in China from the two aspects: reception environments and translators' identities.Finally the paper holds that the different receiving situations of the three Chinese versions of Stray Birds are affected by the reception environments of target language on the one hand,and the identities of Chinese translators on the other hand.
