In the past few years,college teachers have become the hot topic of researches both at home and abroad.Among previous studies,few researches have been done concerning college teacher job stress and job burnout,especially college English teachers',most of them are focused on the teachers of primary and secondary schools.Hence,this paper makes an attempt to study the two factors: job stress and job burnout and to find out the current state and relationships between them,with college English teachers as the research subjects.According to our country's actual situations,this paper makes a further study on the college English teacher job stress and job burnout with the expectation that it can provide some useful advice and help college English teachers take some measures to relieve their job stress and prevent job burnout.This paper makes an empirical research on current college English teacher job stress and job burnout and the relationships between them by means of questionnaires and interview.The 59 research subjects in this paper are college English teachers from four universities in Wuhan,Hubei Province.The two questionnaires used are Li Chaoping's MBI-ES(2003)and Li Hong's College Working Stress Scale(2003).Descriptive Analysis,Standard Deviations,Independent Samples Test,Correlation Analysis,Regression Analysis are applied in this study.In addition,a semi-structured interview is employed in this paper to get qualitative data.12 teachers are interviewed by the author,3 teachers are chosen from each school according to their gender,professional title and teaching experience.The results are as follows:1.The mean score of teacher job stress is 2.2959,below midpoint 2.5,which means college English teacher job stress is relatively low.Working load is one of the most important factors leading to college English teacher job stress.2.The mean score of teacher job burnout is 2.5989,below midpoint 3,which means college English teacher job burnout is not serious.Emotional exhaustion is the most serious of the three dimensions.3.In job stress,significant differences are found in education background and school type while no significant differences are found in gender,age,teaching experience,professional title and marital status.4.In job burnout,significant differences are found in age and school type while no significant differences are found in gender,teaching experience,professional title,education background and marital status.5.There is a relatively high positive correlation between job stress and burnout.Working interest has positive predication on job burnout;working load and working interest have positive predication on emotional exhaustion;working load has negative predication on diminished personal accomplishment.
