Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad centrally described the situation of the Russianslife and spirits at modern time.This thesis will describe,reflect and criticize the Russian spirit in this novel and attempt to richly and objectively reveal the essence of Russian spirit.This thesis includes three parts.Chapter one detailed outlines the Russian Spirit in Under Western Eyes,points out cynicism as the mark of Russian Spirit and presents the essence of it.Then,this chapter deeply analyzes the Russian spirit and generalizes its two major characteristics:unrealistic and irresponsibility.Chapter two detailed describes the disastrous effects of cynicism presented by the novel,analyzes the prevalence of moral nihilism and violence brought by the cynicism,and reveals the great harms to different classes at Russian society,including the revolutionists,the rulers and the common persons.Chapter three,through presenting the shortcomings of first person internal focalized narrative,points out various arguments on Russian spirits from the eyes of English old teachers were the products of estranging Russia,totally treating them as the opposite of western spirit,which strongly covered the positive aspects of Russian spirit that saved the protagonists of the novel finally.Then,through the analysis of the unreliable narrative at this novel,this thesis presents the contradictions at the heart of Conrad and reveals the complex of writing of Russian spirit.Finally,it is necessary to leave western eyes and find new ways to comprehensively understand Russian spirit by different eyes. |
