Margaret Fuller was a prominent woman in the middle-nineteenth century of America. She had taken part in Transcendental Club, became an editor of The Dial. She referenced the theory of Transcendentalism-----everyone could improve oneself to develop her feminism that men and women should have equal status in society. In her writing Woman in the Nineteenth Century,Fuller proved that male and female had the same ability, and she made use of female characters of Greek Myth to defend women's talents.Fuller also put forward the Androgyny theory concluding that everyone's characteristics include two aspects-----Masculinity and Femininity.Fuller argued that women should not constrained by family commitments and by low expectations, and women had their rights to choose their own way to life.Fuller was not only the pioneer in the theory of American Feminism, but also put it into practices. She held conversations in Boston, and awakened the women consciousness through the education. And Fuller put the conversations as a platform to make women send out their voice. With being concerned about women's rights,Fuller paid attention to the social ills of American society in the process of industrialization, appealing to Americans to reduce the desire for materials and to concentrate more on spiritual world.Fuller also pointed out the problems in American city construction and experiment of utopian society, and put forward her own understanding.Italian revolution widened Fuller's sight and changed her thought about Abolitionist Movement, and even made Fuller see the flaws of America's democratic system.Fuller endeavored to spread Transcendentalism and promoted the cultural independence of the America.Though her critics about social ills,we could see the complicated picture of American society in middle 19th century.Fuller redefined women's identity and developed a systematic theory on women's rights which was the source of American feminism. It also provided the theoretical basis for feminist movement in 1960s.
