In the 1980s, with the "cultural turn" in translation studies, feminists bring the aspect of "gender" into translation theories. They challenge the traditional translation theories, aiming at eliminating gender discrimination against female in the translation field as well as in the whole society. Thereafter, feminist translation theories are introduced to China and infuse new blood into the translation studies in China.Margaret Fuller:A New American Life, written by Megan Marshall, is a biography of Margaret Fuller, the famous journalist, critic, and women’s rights advocate in America. This groundbreaking book has successfully depicted the legendary life of Margaret Fuller: chief editor of Thoreau, the closest friend of Emerson, correspondent for the war, and tragic heroine. From the perspective of feminist translation studies, this thesis makes a detailed analysis of the translation of Margaret Fuller:A New American Life. Through a text analysis, this thesis aims to discuss the application of feminist translation theories, especially in feminist literary works. The first chapter discusses the research background and meaning of this thesis. The second chapter reviews the development of feminist translation theory, introducing some theories and ideas of the representative figures. The third chapter focuses on the analysis of translation practice. Through textual and comparative analysis, this thesis tries to prove that the application of feminist translation theories could improve translator’s gender consciousness, thus vividly presenting female figure and identity depicted in the original text.
