Along with the research value of The Call of the Wild,a well-known work from Jack London, increases constantly, more and more its Chinese versions emerge.Although there are extensive researches about it and its Chinese versions from various perspectives, hardly any of them are conducted from the perspective of cohesion.Cohesion is one of important methods of textual analysis, since cohesion theory was put forward, many scholars have widely applied it into translation studies, and achieved great achievements. It is crucial to have an accurate understanding and flexible application of cohesion devices in the process of producing coherent renditions in semantics. In this regard, this thesis studies comparatively the three Chinese versions of The Call of the Wild from the perspective of cohesion. The establishment of cohesion theory originates from the publication of book Cohesion in English co-authored by Halliday and Hasan in 1976,in this book, cohesion is categorized into two parts: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Afterwards,Halliday and Hasan further improve the cohesion theory and divide cohesion theory into structural cohesion and non-structural cohesion in their book Language,Context and Text. Therefore, this thesis studies the processing of cohesion in three renditions of The Call of the Wild from the two aspects of structural and non-structural cohesion, aiming to explore the similarities and differences of the three translators' handling cohesion devices and provide some guidance for literary translation. Some conclusions can be drawn from this thesis: it is undeniable that accurate reproduction of cohesive mechanism in the original is important, but some other influential factors such as TT readers, the language differences, textual and rhetorical effect, etc on rendition also cannot be ignored. Therefore, faithfulness and flexibility should be attached equal importance in the process of translation.
