A Report On The Translation Of Engineering Bid Documents From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the increasing development of economic globalization,trade cooperation between multinational companies is getting much closer,and numerous domestic enterprises are expanding their business into global market and participate in international bid and bid invitation activities as well,therefore,the Chinese-English translation of the bid documents plays an essential role in the global communication and cooperation.This practice report is based on the translation of the technical bid documents of Supervision for the Tianjin YuPei Port-vicinity Modern Logistics Center Projector for Tianjin Senyu Construction Technology and Law Co.Ltd,not only analyzing the skills and strategies in translating bid documents from the prospective of Skopos Theory,but also elaborating that how the translators apply different methods to the translation process to achieve the purposes of translation with the guidance of the “Three Principles”.This translation report is divided into five parts.The first part is the introduction of the project including the source and basic information of the bid document and the practical meaning of this translation practice.The second part summarizes the overall process of this translation practice including the preparation before translation,the steps during the translation and subsequent issues after the translation work.The third part is a brief introduction of Skopos Theory,summarizing the development process and main ideals of the theory and discussing the effects and enlightenment the Skopos Theory has brought to the translation of bid document from perspectives of “skopos principle” “coherence principle” and “loyalty principle”.The fourth part is case analysis,illustrating the application of several translation methods such as linear translation,combination,amplification,omission and conversion in the translation of bid documents.The last part gives a summary of this practice report,mainly including the experience and skills the translator has gained and leftover problems.
