Kang Youwei is one of the most influential people in China's modern history.Not only did he launched the famous movement of Hundred Days' Reform in 1898,thus pushing forward the development process of China's modern history,but also made great contributions to ideology,literature and art.From a certain point of view,Kang Youwei's political achievements have covered his achievements in culture and art.Throughout Kang Youwei's lifetime,his life is accompanied with his enthusiasm for landscape and garden art,no matter the life of studying and writing books in early years or the life of going into exile after political reform.From Mount Xiqiao of Guangdong,landscape of Guilin,Guangxi,Suzhou Garden to the North Sea Thatched Cottage of Sweden,he wrote different poems to record the beautiful scenery of classical Chinese gardens and wrote travel notes to express his appreciation for western gardens.Moreover,he takes his requirements for the residence to reflect his understanding of garden art.With further researches to Kang Youwei's Hundred Days' Reform movement in 1898,the details which related to history has gradually came into people's horizon and people gradually get a more comprehensive understanding of Kang Youwei.As an advanced Chinese people in modern times,he spent all his life witnessing the shock and integration of ideology and culture.He is one of the earliest pioneers who considers China's traditional garden from the perspective of the world.In 1979,he visited Hong Kong and expressed his feelings that “the magnificent rooms,clean roads and strict policemen in western world show they govern their country by law and we can't regard them as the barbarians of ancient times.” After the failure of Hundred Days' Reform movement in 1898,Kang Youwei experienced 16 years' travelling life and he wrote travel notes to narrate sees and hears overseas.He also contrasted classical Chinese garden with his sees and hears overseas and integrated his whole accumulated thought of garden making into the his residences of different periods.In combination with Kang Youwei's poems,travel notes and his residences of different periods,people can study and understand his different beauty-appreciations and requirements for garden art in different life stages,which not only help us to understand his works from a new perspective,but also help us to thoroughly study the development of China's garden art ideology during the process of great integration of ideology in modern history by analyzing Kang Youwei's works and his garden activities.
