A documentary film is one that recounts,records and researches the actual world.It has a myriad of usage ranging from complete documentation of an actual even,to reality shows.The earliest motion pictures were in fact documentaries,experimental films such as “The Factory Gate”,“The Station” and “An Infant's Lunch” were first screened at the Hall de Indies of the Le Grande Cafe on 14 Simpson Avenue on 28 th December,1895.Documentary films experienced its renaissance in China during the late 19 th century,under the influence of foreign filmmakers documenting the Sino-Japanese war,Chinese cinematographers such as Liankui Zhu also made timely fact films such as “The Conflict of Wuhan”.In 1953,the first professional institution for news and documentation film were established in Beijing--The Central News and Documentary Film Studio,ushering a new era for the development of documentary films in China.However documentary filmmakers were rarely acknowledged by the public,and scarcely appear in front of the lens,few have published films or writings about the harsh life they lived.Therefore,this thesis hopes to recount their lives behind the scenes and contribute as much as possible to the acknowledgments of these unsung heroes.This thesis consists of four parts;Chapter one mainly introduces “The Story Behind The Lens”,the relationship between documentary films and its filmmakers,the inspiration from participation and the reason for choosing the topic.The introduction of documentary and its filmmakers allows the readers to better understand the produce and its producers,a fundamental bases for the thesis.Narration of the filmmakers thought and idea gives a better understanding of the hardship endured by the filmmakers.Induction of logic behind the choice of topic let the readers a parameter understanding of the filmmakers psyche.The second chapter consists of reference articles used in the documentary,its main characters and film's content.The content,founded on references article's basic theory,gives a general description of the character's quality and personality,allowing preliminary understandings of the characters for audiences and readers.Detailed description of the film's content enables audiences and readers to deeper understand the documentary.The third chapter consists mainly on the techniques used in “The Story Behind The Lens”,such as the Pre-sound Post-picture technique used during the shooting and editing that enables a more artistic finished product.The fourth chapter mainly writes about the difficulties,ideology,introspect and expectations of the production team and filmmakers,exhibiting the fearlessness and perseverance of the writer while facing difficulties,and the hope of more attention and acknowledgment of those working behind the scenes.This thesis employs relative knowledge from mass culture and the study of communication,narrates a works creation,middle phase and final stage.Exhibits the admiration of the writer towards documentary filmmakers,allowing audiences to realize the existence of the of these filmmakers and capture the emotions expressed through their artwork.Enticing more and more to acknowledge those who works behind the lens.
