As information era develops,documentary,especially ecological documentary,has gradually become an important tunnel for spreading information,making it a hot topic in the academic fields of aesthetics,naratology,ecological ethics and education.But few scholars have studied it from the perspective of public service advertisement(hereinafter to be referred as PSA)that is a non-profitable persuasion mechanism,centering on persuading function,being closely related to the ecological documentary.From the perspective of PSA,the thesis takes commentary of An Inconvenient Truth as research materials to study ecological documentary commentary(hereinafter to be referred as EDC),theoretically basing on the theory of Aristotle's three appeals.Three research questions are being raised:(1)Do the PSA functions exist in EDC?(2)What kinds of PSA functions exist in EDC?(3)How are the PSA functions in EDC realized from the perspective of Aristotle's three appeals?The thesis combines the qualitative approach with the quantitative approach as methodology.By taking stratified sampling method,the author selects 66 examples from 354 commentaries in the ratio of 10:29:27.Secondly,the selected examples are to be analyzed by exemplification,description,deduction and comparison,making an interpretative analysis of PSA functions and its realization in EDC.The paper has proved that PSA functions do exist in EDC,namely,informing function,stimulating function and persuading function.In addition,the realization of the three functions from the perspective of Aristotle's three appeals has been analyzed.Firstly,the commentary realizes its logical appeal by enthymeme and Paradeigma to prove its rationality to the audience.Secondly,it evokes the fear appeal,pity appeal and love appeal to realize its emotional appeal to the audience.Finally,it presents the virtue,practical wisdom and good will to realize its ethical appeal to the audience.The thesis applies Aristotle's three appeals into the researching area of EDC and PSA,providing a new angle for the study of it.It,to some extent,promotes the spreading of EDC,providing a guidance for study of advertising functions in EDC.
