The “defamiliarization” theory is one of the core concepts in Russian Formalism.As an independent concept in literary theory,it was firstly proposed by Shklovsky,who was the most representative pioneer of Russian Formalism.This theory was firstly applied to guide the creation of poetry and other works of art,and was later widely introduced into literary creation,aiming at realizing the “literariness” of literature by means of defamiliarized devices.Russian Formalists claim that “literariness” is the most essential feature of literary works,and the writers' creative employment of the defamiliarized devices aims for the realization of “literariness” in literature.Similar with literary works,the essence of literary translation also lies in “literariness”,which is usually regarded as the criterion for the distinction between literary translation and non-literary translation.Therefore,the literary theory of “defamiliarization” should be applied to guide the practices of literary translation,in order to make the translators notice the importance of the original defamiliarized devices,and help them to consciously maintain and represent these defamiliarized devices which can truly reflect the “literariness” of literature.As a result,the translators can not only reserve the original flavor of the source texts,but also highlight the literary value of the translated texts,so as to eventually attract the target readers and promote the communications among different cultures.Shen Congwen's masterpiece—Biancheng,has not only attracted numerous readers both at home and abroad with its unique artistic charm and vivid local customs,but also long been favored by translators from different countries.The employment of defamiliarized devices in Biancheng is mainly manifested in three aspects,namely,the innovation of diction and the unique arrangement of sentence structures,as well as the skillful usage of various rhetoric devices.As for the translators,to a great extent,how they treat and deal with these defamiliarized devices determines the success of their translations.From this point of view,this paperattempts to study the translation strategies adopted by Jeffrey C.Kinkley in his translation of Biancheng,and with detailed analyses of specific examples in the text,the author tries to discuss Kinkley's maintenance and representation of these defamiliarized devices in Biancheng.This thesis aims to demonstrate that the literary theory of “defamiliarization” is of great importance for guiding the practice of literary translation,so as to further broaden the view of translation studies and advance the development of translation studies.Numerous researches have been conducted on Biancheng and its different translations,but rarely have been done from the perspective of defamiliarization theory.The author just wants to set the ball rolling,with an expectation that translators can pay much more attention to the defamiliarized devices in the source texts,bring their creativity into full play,and adopt the most appropriate translation strategies for the better maintenance and representation of these defamiliarized devices in their translations.
