Based on the English-to-Chinese translation practice of two short fictions written by Mike Resnick, this dissertation discusses the translation strategies for defamiliarization in literary works. The defamiliarization effects are defined by close reading and stylistic analysis. Translation strategies for defamiliarization should be in accordance with the overall requirements of the translation project and be determined regarding the effective stylistic aspects:first, based on source-text analysis and extra-textual considerations, the target texts in general are rendered with domestication; second, defamiliarization at the lexical level is literally translated, re-creating the defamiliarization effects by discussing realistic issues in a fictional setting; third, defamiliarization at the textual level is freely translated with sentence order kept, creating a sense of freshness by dislocating individuality.
