| Given the prominence of World Press Photo(referred to as WPP herein after)in its role to "encourage the highest standards in photo journalism" for 60 years as it states, the research into it maybe a trial to explore into possible successive styles of visual storytelling, examines the narratives of Daily Life photography singles of the award winning works in the latest 20 years(1997-2016),although it is neither the only or the highest standard of journalistic photography.Documenting either the ordinary or extraordinary in everyday life, this category has been an important part complementing the spot news and general news.At the same time, the time of visual journalism, image has taken much importance in both the agenda setting and pursuit of profession in journalism. As a way to tell richer stories, and a way to see things people might not otherwise see, visual storytelling bears much importance in journalism, with its special role in the manifestation of news.It has taken a role to make news watching more effective as one can better relate the news to real life situations and understand fully what it must be like to be in that actual place at that actual time. While incorporating the happening of a 3D event into a.still graphic picture, news image has taken much journalistic, aesthetic and social meanings. In conduction of the research, this thesis firstly makes a classification of these pictures according to their themes and subjects, and then, based on the framing theory, classifies them into different frames, and then makes chi-square analysis to see if there is a relation between different themes and frames.Research questions include how the graphic choice may contributes to the orientations of the photographer,no matter journalistic or sociological. What are the long-term concerns or deep-seated values under it.How are they reflected through the still scenes of ordinary life. The findings suggest that the hot spot issues largely take a revealing frame, which often provides a peek into the issue or the whole of the issue through the destiny of a single subject recorded by the camera. While those recording the customs, countries and features of districts take more of a still and symbolic frame.Last but not least, those ordinary scenes of some groups of people take more of a human interest and care perspective for them, especially for the vulnerable. |
