The Chinese Classical Culture In Marilyn Chin's Poetry

Marilyn Chin is a very famous Chinese American poet,she has won a lot of awards,but compares to so many awards,the researches on her poetry seem much less.The poems of Marilyn Chin and China are inextricably linked,this dissertation is just about to discuss how Marilyn Chin's poetry influenced by Chinese traditional culture.This dissertation is composed of four chapters,including of the Introduction and Epilogue,The first chapter covers the current research of Marilyn Chin and what I will discuss on this topic,The last chapter is Epilogue,The second chapter is to introduce the Confucianism and Taoism in her poetry.The first section describes the background of Marilyn Chin's life:she lived in Hong Kong before seven years old,her parents born and raised in China,she receive education in America,this kind of background makes her repressed by sexism and racism both.As a feminist,she fight with the sexism in Confucianism,and she deviate from the a culture of Confucian:Filial piety.Then is Taoism,including two sections,too.The first section describe the basic understanding of Tao in her poetry,the second section says how does she solve the Cultural dilemma between China and America through Zhuangzi's wisdom.No one has study her poems in this two perspectives.The third chapter is about how Chinese classical poems affect Marilyn Chin?Marilyn Chin has expressed her love for Chinese classical poetry on many occasions,her poems echo each other at a distance through two ways:one is the form of poetry,the other one is reformative re-created.The first section is about the form:She imitate the style of Fu?Jueju.The second chapter has discussed the relationship between Marilyn Chin's poems and Chinese classical poetry,like poetry of the Tang Dynasty,folk ballads and so on.She express her feelings as a Chinese-American through original poetry,absorb the images which frequently appear in Chinese classical poetry.In a word,this dissertation demonstrates how does Chinese culture affect Marilyn Chin's Poetry through the method of literature comparison,explain the different attitudes to Chinese and American's cultures,how they get together peacefully in Marilyn Chin's world.What my research want to says most is to get a deeper understanding of Chinese American Literature in the cross-cultural field.
