Application Of Catford's Translation Model In Translation From English To Chinese

Catford first brought up the theory of translation shift in the book A Linguistic Theory of Translation,using the structure of grammar to apply the theory into translation studies and fully analyzed the component analysis and translation equivalence which brought up 4 ways of translation shift.Firstly he analyzed the different ways of word-formation and sentences building,and then he provided relative ways of translation,which had profound influence upon later researches.Thus the author decided to use Catford's translation theories for analysis.This thesis analyzes the differences between source language and target language base on translation practices,and then tries to find out the importance and usage of the 4 ways of translation shifts,hoping to provide some strategies for similar translation practices.Examples in the essay were picked from the Chinese translation of The Accursed Through the analysis of the description of mentality and communication,the author did some research of the adaptability of the translation shifts.The conclusion turns out to be the shift ways are adaptable for the author's translation practices and they need to be chosen according to Chinese grammar and the context of the original text.Catford's theory of translation shifts can help translators tackle the barrier between languages.On the basis of translating correctly,the theory can make the translation process more fluent.It is suggested that translators choose translation wisely in the process based on thorough understanding of Catford's translation theory.
