The Red Sorghum was the first literature work of Mo Yan that gained access to great commercial success as soon as it was translated into the foreign countries and caused strong repercussions. On the creative background of Northeast Gaomi Township, this work used a large number of dialects with strong national and regional characteristics, thus making it a typical representative of root-seeking literature work. Its unique style, fascinating stories, and clever writing techniques have been favored by the domestic readers. With the birth of different translation versions,Red Sorghum was introduced to the world. Its English version translated by Horward Goldblatt pushed it to the peak.It is also because of the excellent translation of Horward Goldblatt that makes the Chinese culture spread to the world faster, which results in the Western English-speaking countries seeing a more real China, hence strengthening cultural exchange between China and the Western countries.Goldblatt's successful translation experience deserves the majority of scholars to learn and study.Dialect, with a distinctive national and regional cultural characteristic,is a unique language used within a certain area. How to convey these languages that contain rich cultural connotations accurately to the target readers is an important issue in the translation field. This paper intends to study the translations of dialects in the Red Sorghum translated by Goldblatt from the perspective of Skopos theory.First of all, this paper introduces the theoretical origin and academic background, and then elaborates the three principles of teleology, namely the purpose principle, the coherence principle and the faithful principle.Through the method of case study, combined with the specific dialect translation examples, this thesis makes an analysis of the dialect translation methods and strategies chosen by Howard under the guidance of teleological principles. The dissertation shows that the translation of the Red Sorghum fully embodies the idea that the purpose of translation determines the translating method and strategy.Besides, through different translation methods and strategies,Goldblatt's translation has delivered the features of the source language more accurately, enhancing the readability and coherence of the translation. The source text's style and contents have been presented to the readers to a great extent, indicating the feasibility of skopos theory in the aspect of guiding dialect translation.
