In 2014,General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward: “It is necessary to promote the excellent Chinese culture and art to the world, let foreign people feel its charm, and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.” Culture-loaded words refer to words, phrases and idioms that mark something unique in one culture.Chinese culture-loaded words reflect the unique activities of the Chinese nation, gradually accumulated in the long history of China and different from other ethnic groups. They contain distinctive Chinese culture. The study of the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words is conducive to promoting the process of Chinese culture going out. Therefore, the study of the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words is an important subject for the promotion of Chinese culture “going out”.Red Sorghum is a masterpiece written by Mo Yan,the winner of Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012.The novel contains a large number of culture-loaded words with rich Chinese characteristics, depicting the quaint and wild life of rural peasants in northeast Gaomi County,Shandong Province,China.Culture-loaded words contained in this book have certain representativeness and research value. In the process of translating them, the English translator Goldblatt actively spreads the unique Chinese culture contained in these Chinese culture-loaded words on the basis of adapting to the language habits of the target readers. Therefore, the author selects Goldblatt's English version of Red Sorghum as the research object. There are three basic rules of Skopos Theory, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. The primary rule is skopos rule, which means the process of translation activity is determined by the skopos of the translation.Under the background of the Chinese culture going out,the target text should reach the purpose of spreading Chinese culture. Therefore, this thesis selects Skopos Theory as the guiding theory to carry on a critical study on the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words in Red Sorghum translated by Goldblatt, with the evaluation criterion being whether the purpose of spreading Chinese culture is achieved or not. After detailed research, the author has found out that when Goldblatt translates most of the Chinese culture-loaded words in Red Sorghum, his translated versions accord with the background of Chinese culture “going out”,and have achieved the purpose of spreading the corresponding Chinese culture in the English world,so these translated versions are perfect translations. However, there are still some problems in Goldblatt's translations, which don't accord with the background of Chinese culture “going out”,causing the failure to achieve the purpose of successfully spreading relevant Chinese culture in the English world. The author divides these problems into three categories: first, completely losing the cultural information of the original text;second, partially losing the cultural information of the original text;third, mistranslating the cultural information of the original text. And then, the author puts forward corresponding solutions to the three kinds of imperfect translations: first, making up for the completely-lost cultural information of the original text;second, compensating for the partially-lost cultural information of the original text;third, correcting the mistranslated cultural information of the original text.Guided by Skopos Theory, this paper intends to provide improved versions for Goldblatt's imperfect translations, with the purpose of correcting the adverse effects of those imperfect translations and disseminating relevant Chinese unique culture to English readers.Meanwhile, the thesis hopes to provide a new reference for the study of the translation of culture-loaded words, and provide a new theoretical basis for the Chinese cultural “going out”.
