The cultural exchanges between China and the west have been the concerns of researchers, one of which is the translation and introduction of many foreign literary works to China.Especially, west fantasy literature fever has swept China and become one of Chinese readers' favorite choices. However, although there has been already a considerable quantity of related translations published, the quality of them is uneven. At the same time, still relevant researches are limited,so the studies of fantasy literature translation call for further development. This thesis studies the Chinese translation of A Song of Ice and Fire:Game of Thrones based on the relevance translation theory. This research makes use of descriptive method to analyze the translation phenomena in the novel based on the viewpoints of relevance theory. In addition, this study also plans to provide advices to relevant translation behaviors, acting as a new research perspective on this field.Relevance theory came up in Relevance:Communication and Cognition by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson in 1986 and 1995.This theory starts from the cognitive pragmatics and aims at the communicative behaviors.Based on their theory,Ernst-August Gutt published Translation and Relevance:Cognition and Context, which builds a framework of relevance theory to understand translation. In essence, relevance theory treats a translation activity as trans-language and cross-culture communicative activity. In other words, relevance theory has provided a new perspective for translation study and holds some advantages compared with other translation theories since it can cover all the process of the translation.A Song of Ice and Fire is fantasy serial novels by George R.R.Martin.These books were first published in 1996 and have been translated into different versions of over 40 languages. This research shows the trend of mixture for many elements, including cultural elements and fantastic elements, enriching readers' sense of picture while reading. In addition, the introduction of writing technique POV perplexes story narration. Therefore, translators should use organic combination of translation methods, deal with more cultural elements and pay close attention to the consistency for the angle of narrative views.
