The study of adjective-noun collocations can be the bond and bridge between lexics and syntax.Body words are the basic part in the language system.The head,which is located at the top,is the most important part of human body.Therefore,the thesis conducts a study on the meaning extensions as well as collocational features of the collocations of head-part nouns in the process of adj.+ head-part nouns,with the help of componential analysis,metaphor and metonymy.It takes "head/tou"?"ear/er"?"eye/yan"?"nose/bi" and "mouth/zui" as its research objectives and collects language datum from corpuses and dictionaries in English and Chinese.Based on the analysis,the conclusions are drawn as follows.Firstly,when the five head-part nouns collocate with different kinds of adjectives,their basic meanings change.In general,the degree of the meaning extensions of head-part nouns in English are greater than in Chinese.The degree of the meaning extensions of "mouth" and"head" are the greatest.Secondly,the meanings of adj.+ head-part nouns are determined by the meanings of adjectives,head-part nouns,and added meanings.The meanings of head-part nouns mainly transfer via metonymy while the meanings of adjectives extend via metaphor as well as metonymy.And head-part nouns play a more important role in compositional meanings of adjectives and head-part nouns in English and Chinese.Meanings of head-part nouns mainly transfer via part and whole ICM,production ICM,location ICM and so on.Among these ideal cognitive models,part for whole ICM is the most prominent one.And they mostly extend through the appearance and functions of head-part nouns in English while they mainly extend through the appearances of head-part nouns in Chinese.Finally,affected by different properties of head-part nouns and different cognition in English and Chinese,both the collocation of adjectives and head-part nouns meet the requirement of semantic congruity,semantic correlation as well as semantic specialty.The thesis enriches the cross-language comparative researches on adj.+ head-part nouns,making the relevant researches more comprehensive and systematic.It is of great importance to language research and teaching.
