This is an English-Chinese translation report for Lost in Translation.It is an autobiographical memoir written by a Polish American,who is also Jewish,Eva Hoffman.The memoir is made up of three sections,"Paradise","Exile" and "The New World",within which a complete story line is formed.The author covers a wide scope of knowledge in her memoir,ranging from literature,religion,politics,history,music to linguistics,among which the details discussed about Poland,Jewish culture and the Jews' enthusiasm towards music fetch opportunities and open a window for target language readers to gain a close view to the culture and civilization of another nation.Besides,the experience that tells how the author gets to learn a total new system of language leaves impression and brings empathy in the mind's eye of language learners.The translator has finished translating this book completely,with nearly two hundred thousand words produced in the rendition.Going through study and collation,the translator singles out the part that concerns music in "Paradise" and the overall part of "Exile" as the major source text for this translation report."Exile" mainly records the predicament condition of life and learning experience the author ran into and her psychological development after immigration.This translation report comprises of five parts.Difficulty analysis and translation strategies are the nuclear of this report.By means of analyzing translation difficulties coupled with case analysis,the translator comes up with translation strategies for the effort of realizing faithfulness and expressiveness.Targeting the difficulties presented in lexical,syntactic and discourse level,the translator puts forward strategies correspondingly.By virtue of working on the translation practice,the translator believes that the conundrum solving process during translation can not do without the grasp and utilization of proper strategies.At the mean time,it can be known that the most effective way to improve the quality of translation is to keep practicing as well as learning from within.
