Making Anew My Home is a memoir by Mathew Zachariah, published by Friesen Press in2014.In this book,Mr.Zachariah depicts his efforts for finding his “core identity”,which is an aggregation of his life experience involving family, hometown, motherland, adopted country, his education, job and so on.During writing about his own stories, the author also provides basic information of his age and countries,as well as his comments on customs of India and western countries(especially Britain and America),which upgrade his own experience to a level of Indian people's experience in “diaspora”.The author uses many parentheses in the memoir, which causes the most complicated problem to the translator. The writer divided those parentheses into two types: the first type was used for annotation or background information supplying;the second type was used for comment or metaphor. Therefore, the writer considers text type theory of functional theories a suitable guiding translation strategy to decide the reservation or deletion of parentheses in accordance with their different functions. This translation report has four parts: task description, process description, case study and conclusion. The task description provides an introduction of research material and translation strategy,as well as the content and significance of topic. In the process description, the writer focuses on pre-translation preparation and the initial plan of writing this paper.Case study and conclusion focus on translation problems appearing in translation process and principles in parenthesis translation.
