J?rn Rüsen is a famous historian in Germany, and his theory of history has an important influence on the academic world.Since 1960 s,the rise of Postmodernism in the field of history has developed the philosophy of history to the "narrative" stage. It had a significant impact on the development of history, but also suffered a lot of criticism: some scholars believe that postmodernism theory will destroy the objectivity basis of historiography and threaten the history as a subject.Rüsen tried to find a compromise to solve the problem. In Rüsen ’s key concept of his theory: disciplinary Matrix and recent years’ theory, narration has an important position.According to the function of historical narrative,Rüsen divided historical narrative into four types: Traditional narrative,Exemplary narrative,Critical narrative and Genetic narrative, these types can exist simultaneously in one historical work, but we can still use them to analyze historical works.Historical narrative gives meaning to history by representation, historical narrative also closely related to other key concepts in Rüsen’s theory of history, such as historical consciousness and historical interpretation.Rüsen’s narrative theory is different from Postmodernism theory: compared to Postmodernism theory,Rüsen’s narrative theory is closer to history, and it pays more attention to the balance of science and art in historiography and it is more realistic.Rüsen’s historical narrative theory contributes to our understanding of the ideological trend of postmodernism in historiography.
