Study On Author Temperament In Nianchen Ye's Films

Although most of directors are filming the sunny side of love,director Nianchen Ye is fascinated with the shadows behind love,whose unique artistic style makes him one of the most characteristic directors among cenozoic directors in Hong Kong.This paper is based on the auteur theory.In the paper,director Ye's unique aesthetic style and his author's temperament in the narrative of motif,characterization of characters,strategies of narrative and image factors are explored through the analysis of his self-wrote and self-directed "trilogy of love"-Marriage with A Fool,Love is All Not Around and L for love,L for Lies.The introduction demonstrated Ye's course of creation and current research in this field in details.The blank area of researches and the highlights of this paper are also clearly elaborated.In Chapter 1,the development history of Auteur theory and judging criteria for "author of film" are well organized and presented.According to the judging criteria for "author of film",director Ye's qualification as an "author of film" is identified.Chapter 2 analyzes the motif of director Ye's films and characters in these films.Considering the specific history of society in Hong Kong,the creation of Ye's films as well as their corresponding culturally careful connotation is analyzed.Meanwhile,it detailedly discussed the anti-tradition peculiarity with respect to the establishment of figures in his films.The characteristic strategies of narrative are studied from the perspective of Narratology in Chapter 3.The versatile perspectives and personalized narrative style are representative elements in Ye's films,which are also the most convincing evidence for the author temperament of Ye's films.Stylistic utilization of image factors is well shown in Chapter 4.The director marks his individual signature in several aspects including the change between light and shadow,the management of colors,the render of sound,etc.In chapter 5,Ye's contributions and values for the expansion of love-related films and local film market in Hong Kong are confirmed.On the other hand,his silence in negative aspects of values and ethical standards is doubted and criticized.
