| In light of Bakhtin's dialogism,all utterance of human beings is in the complex web of dialogic relations.Translation is no exception.It is an utterance construction in a certain social and historical context,so the translation is also a process of equal dialogues among the author,protagonists,readers and the translator under certain times,society and culture.By the comparison between David Copperfield of Charles Dickens and Song Zhaolin's Chinese translation and through the analysis of polyphonic dialogues in the novel,the thesis tries to comprehend the features,ideas of protagonists and the complex relations among them,to make clear how the translator understands and deals with the double voice in the translation process and how his chronotope background influences the translation strategies,style,and quality of the translated text.The research problems focus on the dialogism applicability to the analyses of the novel David Copperfield and its translation.The thesis aims to figure out if Song Zhaolin's translation reproduces faithfully the essence and connotation of the dialogic relations in the original text,see how he presents the rich and diverse heteroglossia in another different chronotope,and find out whether his voices are left in the translated text and what the impact factors are.Through the comparison study and inductive analyses,the brief findings are as follows.Polyphony is one of the most important and fundamental concepts of Bakhtinian dialogism,which provides people with another new perspective for literary criticism.Dickens and his novels have a far-reaching influence in Soviet,particularly on the literary creations of Dostoevsky.Therefore,it is a creative and rational choice to apply Bakhtin's dialogic thoughts to analyze Dickens's novel and its translation.Based on the macro-dialogue,Dickens depicts vividly the Victorian life scenes in David Copperfield.The translator grasps the historical context of the original text and skillfully reproduces the dialogic relation between the fiction and reality,disclosing the profound social problems such as the gap of wealth and class contradictions.On the other hand,micro-dialogue focuses on the double-voiced discourse in the text.It is the representation of dialogues among characters and between the author and his characters.The author creates double voice artfully in his writing,partly hidden and partly visible within the words,while the translator is also a reproducer or even a creator of the double voice in his translation,which is a challenging task.There is no lack of artful translations,presenting the poetic effect of the double voice.Nevertheless,quite a few implicit meanings of the second voice have been hindered;forsaken and even changed.The imperfect presentations of double-voicedness leave some regrets in the translated text.The interaction of heteroglossia in communication embodies the confrontation and exchange among various voices,ideas,and values.David Copperfield is a realistic novel,so it is an all-embracing miniature of social heteroglossia,which reflects all kinds of living state and languages of each social status and profession.Every single character has his or her speech style and standpoint.The translator adopts different methods accordingly and makes full use of authentic Chinese expression and heteroglossia context to revivify the features and thoughts of the protagonists.Through dialogue and exchange,the translator makes the decisions of translation strategies and the choice of words and realizes the reconstruction of the text meaning.Due to the different ideology from the author in the distinct chronotope background,the translator even subconsciously leaves his own voice in the translated text,which reveals his persistent inheritance and admiration for traditional Chinese virtues.Bakhtin's dialogic thoughts provide a new way of thinking for translation studies.Their enlightenment on text analyses and translation practice is worth exploring. |
