The thesis chooses British masterpiece David Copperfield as a sample and collects 30 English to Chinese translations of the excerpts in David Copperfield by the MTI students in different grades through questionnaire survey and takes the universal over-westernization phenomenon in Chinese as study objects. Those 30 collecting translations are compared with the translation by the author herself to prove the universality of the over-westernization and contrasted with published Chinese version to define the categories of the over-westernization phenomenon, exploring reasons for the phenomenon and providing targeted countermeasures. In this way,the over-westernization phenomenon in English to Chinese translations could be effectively reduced and the birth of excellent translation will be promoted. To study the phenomenon deeply, the author has read related literatures in past five years about westernization in Chinese language, and then introduces it in detail from its historicity and inevitability, analyzing its research trend, having a clear idea about related study achievements, which lays theoretical foundation for the following study.Next, the author defines the range of the Chinese over-westernization in the English to Chinese translation, points out its features and negative effects, and raises the following main study content. The author compares those collecting English to Chinese translations with each other, and finds out the universal over-westernization in Chinese language, refining them into cases at the lexical level and syntactical level, contracting cases with the corresponding places in Zhuang Yichuan's version in 2000 and doing analysis. Finally, the author draws the conclusion that the root of over-westernizations lie in rigid translation, literal translation and over-foreignization,those present on the language form during translation from English to Chinese, and are also linked with the subjective reason on the aspect of translator and objective reasons on the aspect of cultural situation. The countermeasures must be taken according to both subjective and objective reasons to reduce the phenomenon effectively. On the one hand, the comprehensive qualities of translators must be increasingly improved;on the other hand, translators must make good translation, free translation and domestication, accordingly seek common ground and reserve differences according to the actual situation. In this way,it could create a good environment for Chinese development, increase China's voice and strengthen the power of cultural spreading.
