| Eco-translatology is an emerging eco-translation paradigm of translation studies put forward by Chinese scholars,which is mainly based on Translation as Adaptation and Selection.It emphasizes the concept of translator-centredness during the translating process and analyzes translators’ selective adaptation and adaptive selection in terms of different aspects,such as the translational eco-environment,three dimensional transformations.Professor Huang Zhonglian puts forward the theory of translation variation by analyzing a lot of variations in translation practices.And he claims that the translator is the “subject” of variation,and that in order to adapt to the specific needs of target readers,translators can select different strategies of variations,which indicates that translators have subjective initiatives during the translating process.According to the above analysis,it can be concluded that both eco-translatology and translation variation stress translators’ subjective initiatives during the translating process.Therefore,to some extent,it is reasonable and feasible to analyze variations from the perspective of eco-translatology.By analyzing translation variations in Shapiro’s English version of Annals of a Provincial Town in terms of eco-translatology,those conclusions can be drawn.Firstly,translation variation not only exists in practical translation,but also in literary translation.Secondly,in order to adapt to the specific translational eco-environment or achieve special aims,translators can adopt different strategies of variation during the translating process.In addition,when employing eco-translatology to study translation variations in the translated text,the author finds out that the eco-translatology itself has some limitations,which can be summarized as the following.In the first place,in eco-translatology,the boundaries among the linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions are not clear,so there are many overlaps.Secondly,eco-translatology has comprehensively and deeply explained translators’ adaptation,but as for translators’ selection,it just puts forward the multi-dimensional transformations and does notconcretely illustrate how translators make selections during the translating process.Hence,it is inevitable to have some flaws when the eco-translatology is applied to instruct translators’ activities.The thesis explores translation variations in terms of eco-translatology,which is not only good for the further development of eco-translatology,but also can provide a new perspective for scholars to analyze translation variations. |
