An Analysis On C-E Translation Of Political Speeches From Interpersonal Function Perspective

As one kind of public speech,the main purpose of political speech is to state the current affairs and clarify the gov ernment's policy.Political speeches have rich interpersonal meanings.At present,som e scholars at hom e and abroad have done translation studies of political speeches,but few scholars apply SFL to do study about the translation of political speeches.Even few scholars apply Halliday's interpersonal function to do research about C-E translation of political speeches p ublished by Chinese leaders.In term s of interpersonal function,the thesis m akes a comparative analysis of ST and TT of the selected political speeches to analyze the C-E translation of political speeches and how the interpersonal function is realized in TT.This thesis takes the four speeches by Premier Li Keqiang of ST and TT in the year of 2015 as the research material.Qualitative method is mainly analyzed,together with quantitative m ethod.This thesis m akes a com parative analysis of m ood and modality system in ST and TT to find similarities and differences in this two aspects,and further analyzes th e differences.Proper translation strategies are adopted in the process of C-E translation to realize the transfer of interpersonal function from ST to TT.It is found in the research that TT is similar to ST in terms of mood system and modality system,which helps the translator preserve the mood and modal types of ST to realize th e interpersonal function in TT.Because Chines e and English dif fer in grammatical structures and language for ms,ST and TT differ in the expression of mood and modality sy stem.The translator ca n adopt p roper translation strategies according to actual needs and p roper context.In trans lation of m ood system,the translator needs to add the subject in TT or convert the object in ST into the subject in TT,and add the temporal operator in TT or convert the temporal adverbial in ST into the temporal operator in TT,and convert the adverbial modifier in ST into the modal adjunct in TT.In translation of modality system,the translation strategy of “literal translation” is adopted to deal with the modal operators.Because the modal operator in ST have different corresponding words in TT,it is better to choose a proper m odal operator according to contex t and the interpersonal meaning of ST.The translation strategies of “addition”,“literal translation”,“conversion” and “deletion” are adopted in order to achieve the maximum equivalence between ST and TT.On the one hand,this research m akes us have a better understanding of interpersonal function.On the other hand,it provides a new angel for C-E translation of political speeches and it also proves the applicab ility and feasibility of interpersonal function to the research of C-E translation of political speeches.
